This bread will knock your socks off! It's pretty simple, and super delicious! This is Doc, Fairy Godmother, Sleeping Beauty, Sleepy, and Happy's favorite. Once you start eating it, its hard to stop, especially when there's butter and the loaf came right out of the oven! I'm drooling just thinking about it...!
When I was about 10 years old, I entered this bread in the county fair and won first prize and they wanted me to enter it into the State fair. I was so excited! It was my first time ever making bread all by myself and it turned out beautifully! I still have my ribbons hidden away in my hope chest somewhere. :) The recipe came from a Mennonite cookbook my mom bought when I was a little girl.
Easy French Bread
Makes 2 loaves
Dissolve:
2 pkg. dry yeast in
1/2 c. warm water
1/2 tsp. sugar
Combine:
2 T. sugar
2 T. fat (butter)
2 tsp. salt
2 cups boiling water
Cool to lukewarm and add yeast mixture.
Stir in: 7 1/2- 8 cups flour
Knead 10 minutes or until smooth and elastic. Place in greased bowl, turning once. Let rise until doubled in size. Punch down and let rest 15 minutes. Divide dough in half. On floured surface, roll each half to 12 x 15" rectangle. Roll into loaves. Place loaves on greased cookie sheets and make 4 or 5 slashes diagonally across the tops. Let rise until double.
Mix and brush on:
1 egg beaten
2 T. milk
Bake at 400 for 20 minutes.
This bread goes great with Chicken Alfredo Soup. Usually I make this just to go with the soup! Mmm-mm! :)

ReplyDeleteI have never attempted french bread, because I have always had a problem with hoagie buns and the shape seems too much the same so I have been too scared to try. These look so good that I think I need to! I am pinning your recipe so I can hopefully have more success than my previous attempts.
ReplyDeleteThank you for linking up to our Comfort Foods Link Up party. Next week we are doing Saint Patrick's themed food but we are extending this to anything green or Irish (party opens 11). And the following week 30 minutes or less (party opens 18). Then the last party we will have will be Easter food (party opens 25). With the holiday ones it can be the commercial version of the holiday but it also could be what you will be feeding your family on those days. I hope we see you again.
PS we will be following you to see what you will make next!
